Attempting to decipher the financial codes in the daily newspaper can be an exercise in futility.
The first column, under 'stock', is the name of the company...for example in this case 'Starbucks.' The second column is the
symbol of the company, SBUX. It is used as a reference and all the financial organizations use this abreviation when talking
to one another. The volume of traded shares for SBUX on this particular day was 158,451,000 shares. It is written as 158451
as an abreviation. This stock closed the previous day at $28.17 per share which was a change of $0.47 per share from the previous
day's close.
Other possible information that can be provided, depending upon the financial publication, can include dividends
paid, yield (dividend/price), earnings per share, relative price strength, industry group relative strength and max/min prices for
the past year (52 week Hi/Lo).
Your regional or city publication may have some financial information but the serious investor
needs to subscribe to a financially specific publication. Two such great newspapers are the
Wall Street Journal and the
Investors Business Daily.
